Jochen is an Academy Award winning director from Germany. He grew up in East Berlin and started his film career as an editor and assistant director. He also founded a production company Mephisto Film, producing short films which won multiple international film awards. In 2007 Freydank directed, co wrote and produced Toyland, set in Nazi Germany.
The film received 130 nominations and won 40 awards at film festivals all over the world. In 2009 Freydank won an Oscar for Toyland. Freydank's directorial credits include feature films and TV movies among them Homefront, Zorn, Das Joshua Profil and Tatort.
Freydank also directed theatre, wrote screenplays and produced two TV series. He directed the critically acclaimed film Kafka’s The Burrow, a dystopian movie based on an unfinished novel by Franz Kafka, which he also wrote and produced. The movie was nominated at many film festivals including those in Busan, Shanghai and Warsaw.
Freydank's has also directed several very successful comedies such as Grosse Fische-Kleine Fische and the award winning comedy Und Weg Bist Du.
Freydank is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
